Professor Dr. ZHAO Gang
Legal Representative, Deputy Director-General of the National Astronomical Observatories of CAS
Professor of Astrophysics

Prof. Zhao is a scientist in astronomy and astrophysics, covering a wide range of fields of stellar spectra, element abundances, stellar nucleosynthesis, chemical evolution of Galaxy, laboratory astrophysics and extrasolar planets. The analysis of stellar chemical elements has always been an important astrophysical topic. It is of momentous significance in understanding the stellar nucleosynthesis and the chemical evolution of galaxies. Through years of research, Prof. Zhao has published over twohundred scientific papers in a series of world-wide SCI journals. These papers involve with accurate and credible observations, meticulous and precise analyses, and catch the coterie’s attention, achieving high reputation in related fields.

Prof. Zhao received his Ph.D. degree in Astrophysics from Nanjing University in 1990. He is currently Deputy Director-General of the National Astronomical Observatories of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Director of the Key Lab of Optical Astronomy of CAS, Chairman of LAMOST Science Committee, and Leading Professor of Stellar Abundance and Galaxy Evolution Group. He has taken charge of several research projects supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China. He was selected to join in the first The Plan for one Hundred Top Scientists of CAS. In 1997, he got support from the National Science Foundation for Distinguished Young Scholars. In 1999, he took part in national major development project of basic research “the great astrophysical problems in 21st century – galactic formation and evolution” and was in charge of one subproject. He won the Guo’s Prize for post-doctor in 1999, the Young Scientists Prize of CAS in 2001, the Chinese Young Scientists Prize in 2002, and the Second Prize of National Natural Science of 2008, and Science and Technology Award of the Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation in 2010.

Prof. Zhao devotes himself to construction, development of astrophysics and student training. He organized a series of academic conferences. Ever since 1993, Prof. Zhao has been giving lectures of “Astrophysical Methods”, “Stellar Spectroscopy”, and has won the CAS HUAWEI Award for Excellent Educators in 2001.
