Education and Career History

Dr Weimin Yuan is lead of the High-Energy Astrophysics Group at NAOC. He received his PhD in physics at Technischen Universitaet Munich and Max-Planck-Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics, Germany. He had worked as postdoctoral fellow at Tsukuba Space Center, JAXA, Japan, for the MAXI mission, and then as a research associate at Institute of Astronomy, University of Cambridge, UK. Since 2004 he had been a research scientist at CAS’s Yunnan Astronomical Observatory, and at NAOC headquarter since 2010. He is also an adjunct professor of astrophysics at the University of Chinese Academy of Science.

Research Fields

high-energy astrophysics, X-ray astronomy; observational study of black holes and active galactic nuclei; high-energy transients and time-domain astrophysics

Achievements
Dr. W. Yuan has been working extensively on observational studies of black holes, accretion processes and spectral energy distribution in active galactic nuclei, using multiwavelength data particularly data from space X-ray astronomy satellites and authoring over 100 reviewed publications. He had also worked for the MAXI mission, an X-ray all-sky monitor on the International Space Station. He served as PI of the proposed CAS’s Soft X-ray All-sky Monitor project in its advanced study phase. Dr. Yuan led the conceiving, proposing and the completed phase-A study of the Einstein Probe (EP) mission, an X-ray time-domain astronomy satellite of the CAS, which is currently under development in phase-C. He is Principal Investigator of the EP mission and lead of the EP Science Centre.
