China-India Workshop on Astronomy and Astrophysics was held in India Bangalore

As a part of Sino-Indo collaboration in Science & Technology, with the supports from the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), the Chinese Embassy in India and the Department of Science & Technology (DST) of India, with the great efforts from the scientists from both sides, the China-India Workshop on Astronomy and Astrophysics was held from 3-5 Dec. 2014 at Indian Institute of Astrophysics, Bangalore, to identify areas of cooperation, collaborating interests, and draw a road map including mode and mechanisms for future collaboration in this area between the two countries.

A Chinese delegation from National Astronomical Observatories, Chinese Academy of Sciences (NAOC), Yunnan Observatories (YNAO), Nanjing Institute of Astronomical Optics and Technology (NIAOT) participated the Workshop. The Chinese delegation was led by Prof. Suijian Xue, the Deputy Director General of NAOC. More than 40 Indian scientists attended the workshop including the DST officer Dr. R. K. Sharma, the Director of Indian Institute of Astrophysics Prof. P. Sreekumar, the dean of Indian Institute of Astrophysics Prof. T. P. Prabhu and so on.

During the Workshop, both sides discussed collaborations based on facilities and projects, such as TMT, LAMOST, FAST, CSRH, NVST, Yunnan 2.4 m telescope, numerical computing site survey at high altitudes and the relative projects in Indian side.

Just one day before the Workshop, India signs up and becomes a full member of TMT. This provides a good chance for collaborations on TMT project between China and India since both countries will make contributions as full members. In Solar Astronomy, China and India also had strong collaborations since many years including the four bilateral meetings, the exchanging visits of scientists. Moreover, NIAOT built two Solar Telescopes for Indian Institute of Astrophysics, one of them has been set up successfully in India in 2014. Both sides agree to deepen collaborations through projects, visits of scientists and jointly supervising students etc. This workshop will help to improve the collaborations between China and India in many study fields on Astronomy and Astrophysics.
