Achievements

Zhao Gang is a leading professor of the National Astronomical Observatories of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), a member of the Physics and Astronomy Group of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council of China, Director of the Key Lab of Optical Astronomy, CAS. He was the President of the Chinese Astronomical Society during 2006-2010.

Dr. Zhao was selected to join in the first “The Plan for one Hundred Top Scientists” of the CAS. In 1997, he got support from the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars. Dr. Zhao was honored with the Young Scientists Prize in the CAS in 2001, the Chinese Young Scientists Prize in 2002, and the second prize of Science and Technology Award of Beijing in 2003. Thereafter in 2004, he was selected for State Class Person of New Century Talents Project. Dr. Zhao was once in charge of two projects respectively under the Innovation Research Groups Program funded by National Natural Science Foundation of China and the important direction project “Research on High Energy Density under the Background of Astrophysics Physics” supported by CAS. In 2007, Dr. Zhao took part in the National Major Development Project of Basic Research (973 project ) “Some frontier Issues in High Energy Density Physics”, and was in charge of one subproject. He was the winner of Second Prize of National Natural Science in 2008, and the receiver of the Science and Technology Award of the Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation in 2010.

Dr. Zhao has been devoting himself to observational astronomy for over 20 years. He has taken the lead in detailed analysis of stellar chemical elements in China, set up a large high-resolution spectra sample of poor-metal dwarfs, and accomplished the systematical quantitative analysis of its chemical abundance. Dr. Zhao was the one who gave the correct formula of the influence of neutral hydrogen collision. Meanwhile, he created the research direction of chemical abundance of extra-solar planetary systems, and found one extra-solar planet for the first time with the domestic telescope.
