LAMOST Fellowship 2013

In 2009 China completed construction of the Large Sky Area Multi-Object Fibre Spectroscopic Telescope (LAMOST). The pilot survey (September 2011 to June 2012) and first-year formal survey (September 2012 to June 2013) are now completed, collecting over 1.7 million spectra. The five-year survey will result in a final catalogue of 5 million spectra, which are a hugely valuable resource for a variety of astronomical projects. We are now awarding LAMOST Postdoctoral Fellowships to support outstanding postdoctoral scientists working on fields related to the LAMOST spectroscopic survey. These can be held at any university or research institute across China. Although the fellowships are independent research positions, applicants should contact host institutes in advance and arrange for a local researcher to act as their advisor for administrative purposes.

Recruitment of these fellowships is ongoing and we anticipate offering up to 10 fellowships this year, selected by peer review. The selection committee will be composed of experts covering all areas of research in astrophysics.

Research supported by LAMOST Fellowship includes theoretical, observational, instrumental, and software development. In addition to pursuing independent research, all fellows are expected to contribute up to 50% of their time in support or development activities in the area of instrumentation, operation support, data processing, archive/virtual observatory, public affairs or science operations with LAMOST.

The fellowships are granted for two years followed by a one-year extension (three years in total). A remuneration package will be provided including the annual salary of about 15,000-30,000 US dollars and a research budget of 10,000 US dollars.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Ph.D. or equivalent in Astronomy, Physics, or related fields, completed or expected by the start date, and a demonstrated record of research excellence. Candidates of all nationalities are encouraged to apply.

POSITION AVAILABLE: November 1, 2013.

The following materials are REQUIRED for the application:

  1. A completed LAMOST Fellowship Application Form
