As a part of Diplomats in Chinese Academy Sciences (CAS) activities, a delegation of 18 diplomats from European Union Delegation in China and the Embassies of its member states in China visited Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Radio Telescope (FAST) at Da Wo Dang, the Karst Depression, at Guizhou Province from March 9-10, 2017.
In the two days’ visit, the delegation had face-to-face discussions with the Chinese counterparts, and were briefed by Dr. PENG Bo, Deputy Manager of FAST Project of NAOC, about the history and development of FAST including its engineering construction and science vision, which was followed by Dr. XUE Suijian, Deputy Director-General of NAOC, on the Introduction of NAOC and its International Cooperation, and Mr. NING Bolun, Deputy Director of European Division of CAS, on CAS and its International Cooperation with Europe. While, Mr. Laurent Bochereau, Minister Counselor of EU Delegation in China, briefed EU Research Infrastructures in Horizon 2020, and Mr. Georg Leube, Science Counselor of German Embassy in China, briefed German research infrastructures as an example from the EU member states.
The delegation also visited, with great interests, to FAST site and its bottom part, and were briefed about the mechanism and technical details of its active reflectors and feed core cabin. The FAST team and colleagues from NAOC also joined the visit with the delegation.
