国台学术报告 NAOC COLLOQUIUM

2012年 第18次 / Number 18, 2012

Cosmic evolution of black holes and galaxies
Dr. Jong-Hak Woo (Seoul National University)
Time: Wednesday, 3:00 PM, May 02, 2012 Location: NAOC A601

Professor Jong-Hak Woo is currently working at the Department of Physics and Astronomy, Seoul National University. He received his Ph.D. from Yale in 2005, and has done two terms of postdoctoral studies (one as Hubble Fellow) before he joined the faculty of SNU in 2009. His main research interests include actively mass-accreting black holes and Galaxy Formation and Evolution.

Abstract:

The present-day correlation of black hole mass with host galaxy properties suggests a close link between black hole growth and galaxy evolution. To investigate the black hole-galaxy coevolution, reliable black hole mass measurements are required. I will present the recent mass measurements based on the reverberation mapping technique from the Lick AGN Monitoring Project, and compare the black hole mass-stellar velocity dispersion relations of AGN and non-AGN galaxies in the present-day universe.  Then, I will discuss cosmic evolution of black holes and galaxies out to z~1-2, based on the single-epoch black hole mass estimates from our long-term projects using the Keck spectroscopy and the HST imaging analysis.

All are welcome!Tea, coffee, biscuits will be served at 2:45 P.M.
