Black holes are collapsed regions of space with very strong gravitational forces, where nothing can escape, not even light. Because astronomers cannot directly observe black holes, understanding their properties is a challenge. This article describes a study where gas is falling into a black hole named GRS1915+105 and the researchers are studying the statistical properties of emissions of the gas as it spirals in. This kind of study can help astronomers better model the dynamics of gas falling into a black hole, which is believed to occur in many kinds of astronomical objects, from a relatively small black hole orbiting a companion star to giant supermassive black holes at the centers of enormous galaxies.
