Researchers who use telescopes on Earth to make astronomical observations have to see through the Earth's atmosphere. When peering through the atmosphere, winds and turbulence make astronomical images appear wavy and distorted. This article describes a technique, called adaptive optics, which can help correct distortions caused by atmospheric turbulence, leading to clearer astronomical images with higher resolution.
