Researchers study the amount of light being emitted from galaxies in order to understand their properties. Some galaxies that emit relatively little light are called low surface brightness galaxies, which astronomers believe experienced different evolutionary histories than ordinary galaxies. This article describes a recent survey of some low surface brightness galaxies that helps astronomers better understand this special class.
