The star Algol is an eclipsing binary, meaning that it is really composed of two stars which orbit around each other and periodically eclipse each other from our perspective. This article describes a study which observed Algol with an x-Ray telescope. The results show that one of the stars in the Algol binary shines brightly in x-rays, but the other one does not. Since x-rays indicate high temperatures and energetic processes, astronomers can conclude that one of the binary stars in Algol has hot gas, but the other does not. This result gives astronomers more insight into how Algol behaves.
