Binary population synthesis study of the supersoft X-ray phase of single degenerate type Ia supernova progenitors TEXT SIZE: A A A
Type Ia supernovae are titanic explosions that occur in a binary system of stars, where a member of the system is a compact white dwarf. When the amount of accumulated material reaches a threshold, the white dwarf detonates. This article explores some details of this complex process, which are not clearly understood, by more closely analyzing what types of white dwarfs explode as supernovae.
