As light from celestial sources passes through Earth's atmosphere, the rays are refracted by turbulence, leading to blurry, distorted images. Adaptive optics is a method of using an integrated system of mechanical motors and telescopic mirrors to try to correct for the distortions in the astronomical images. This article describes a new method of adaptive optics which combines a computer algorithm with mechanical motors in a telescope, helping to correct for atmospheric distortions, yielding clearer astronomical images.
