Discovery of Balmer broad absorption lines in the quasar LBQS 1206+1052 TEXT SIZE: A A A
As material swirls around the black hole of a quasar, friction heats the material to high temperatures, causing it to emit radiation. Also, the motions of the material emitting the radiation can affect the wavelengths of the emitted radiation. This article describes how astronomers study this type of radiation, giving them a better understanding of the processes in a quasar.
