Emergent phenomena occur when relatively simple interactions repeat and grow in complexity. This article describes how gravity can be regarded as an emergent phenomenon and gives plausible models of the large scale behavior of the universe. This article is part of a special issue devoted to the IAU General Assembly, helping experts in this field learn about current research.
