Galaxies show a great variety of forms and dynamical behaviors. Understanding these aspects of galaxies and how they form is one of the biggest challenges in modern astronomy. This article describes the current status of research into the formation of galaxies, and is part of a special issue devoted to the IAU General Assembly.
