A supernova occurs when a star explodes. The amount of light emitted by most supernovae follow well-defined patterns, but some cases appear to be exceptions to the standard model of an explosion. This article describes such a case and offers a theory about why such a case could have occurred, giving astronomers more insight into this issue.
