Gamma-ray bursts are explosions in the distant Universe that release large amounts of energy in a short time. This energy can appear as bursts of gamma-rays that a satellite can detect. Because gamma-ray bursts occur over a short amount of time, satellites that observe them must have special methods of distinguishing the pattern of radiation they emit.
