Astronomical surveys generate large amounts of data in the form of images. The process of storing and transferring these images between locations is becoming an increasing challenge, since transferring large electronic files can take a long time. This article proposes a new way to compress astronomical images, which can save storage resources and time needed for transfer of the data.
