Because the Moon has virtually no atmosphere, astronomical observations in many wavelengths are possible from the surface of the Moon. The Chang'e 3 mission was equipped with a telescope specifically designed to survey ultraviolet sources over a long period of time, which is the first time astronomical data have been collected from the surface of the Moon. This article describes the design of this ultraviolet telescope and shows some initial results from this innovative project.
