President LU Yongxiang Visited the Observatories on Mauna Kea, Hawaii TEXT SIZE: A A A

On May 20, 2010, Professor LU Yongxiang, President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) visited the Mauna Kea Observatories, Hawaii.

President LU and his delegation were warmly received by Directors or Acting Directors of Keck, CFHT, Gemini and Subaru Observatories, who respectively briefed President LU of their own scientific goals , operation mechanisms, research results and international cooperation. President LU made a few comments after hearing their  presentationsas followsFirst, it was very impressive to see  that  Mauna Kea hosts such high level international observatories, and that scientists from different observatories and countries  work together  towards common objectives.  Second, the first class facilities there really  enable cutting-edge and fruitful scientific results . Third, in the field of astronomy, scientific research and technological development are often interdependent and reinforce each other. In the era that space science develops fast,,the advancement of ground- based facilities is of great importance. Finally, international cooperation plays a very important role to further promote the development of science and technology, this is particularly so in astronomy.  This is why CAS strongly encourages its scientists  to actively participate in international cooperation,  including with  the international astronomical  community in Hawaii  in a common effort to push forward the progress of astronomy.

Dr. ZHANG Zhibin, Director-General of CAS Bureau of Life Sciences and Biotechnology, Mr. CAO Jinghua, Deputy Director-General of CAS Bureau of International Cooperation, and Dr. XUE Suijian, Assistant Director-General of CAS National Astronomical Observatories & Project Manager of China TMT also joined this official visit.
