The China-Argentina Radio Telescope was approved by MinCyT of Argentina TEXT SIZE: A A A

The Ministry of Science, Technology and Productive Innovation (MinCyT) of Argentina announced the official approval of the China-Argentina Radio Telescope (CART) on 22 July 2014. An initial amount of $1.5 million will be allocated for the preparation of the CART campus and the construction of part of the infrastructure including the foundation of the antenna for the CART telescope.

The joint CART project is a key cooperative program between China and Argentina aimed at further strengthening the ties related to astronomical collaborations between both countries. A fully steerable 40-meter radio telescope is being built via joint efforts in the San Juan province of Argentina. It was initiated by NAOC and UNSJ, and has been mainly supported by the Ministry of Science and Technology of China (MOST). Once built, CART will be the largest steerable single-dish radio telescope in South America. It will be dedicated to astronomical studies in fields of astrophysics including pulsars, ISM and star formation, and geodetic investigations. The joint CART project will represent a milestone in the development of China-Argentina scientific collaborations.
